Yorkshire trekkers have raised £12,000 to help children in Nepal. But UK charity New Futures Nepal is setting its sights even higher in 2010. It plans to raise £100,000 to build a new orphanage for some of the world’s poorest children - and S Harrison has pledged its support for the third year running.

The 2009 Harrison Trek attracted over 350 walkers who took part in a range of walks around the grounds of Castle Howard and the Howardian Hills.

“It was a great event which attracted support from the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, and Gurkha champion, Joanna Lumley, and walkers from as far afield as Edinburgh and London,” said Harrison chairman Martyn Harrison. “Next year, we want even more people to join in the trek, and make the event bigger and better still.”

The 2010 trek with a range of walks has already been booked for Sunday 20th June – and is part of a programme by the charity to raise £100,000 to build a new orphanage in Kalimpong, just across the Nepalese border in Northern India. Says New Futures Nepal trustee, Lockton-based Colin Culley: “The trek is an important part of our fundraising programme, and one which has quickly established itself on the Yorkshire calendar. Alongside it, this year we are inviting people to “buy-a-brick” for £10 or more, towards the building of the new home.  99p of every pound raised goes directly to support projects in Nepal and northern India and all the trustees of the charity work on a voluntary basis.”

During the year, the charity and Harrison have kept trekkers informed of the benefits which their efforts have delivered. Says Martyn Harrison: “The trek provides a great day out for friends and families but the real reward is in seeing the huge difference which the charity makes to the lives of some of the world’s poorest people.”

Gurkha Kamal Gurung, who helped organise base camp for this year, together with Sgt Sun Gurung, his wife Mrs Mamta Gurung and one year old son Mstr Ceon, met up with Martyn Harrison and Colin Culley recently, to start planning for the 2010 event.

The local Ryedale Stroke Group entered a team of ten people for the 2009 trek, under the leadership of Pat Thompson. Getting from the gardens at Castle Howard through to base camp posed no problem for wheelchair users, thanks to the willing help of the Ghurkhas.

Do something really special in 2010

- in 2009 these people did!

The 2009 Harrison trek for children in Nepal took place on Saturday June 20th with over 350 walkers starting in the grounds of the beautiful Castle Howard and setting off on two, five and fifteen mile treks. This year the event was bigger and even better than the successful 2008 trek, and you can still be a part of it - by pledging funds to support the work of Harrison's chosen charity, New Futures Nepal.

Here's what happened in 2008....

Ten orphans from one of the world’s poorest regions are guaranteed a roof over their heads for another year, thanks to Yorkshire trekkers and charity New Futures Nepal.

Over 250 walkers took part in the 2008 Harrison Trek for Children in Nepal at Castle Howard for UK charity New Futures Nepal, which has a trustee based in Yorkshire, earlier this summer. The latest fundraising figure has been confirmed this week at nearly £14,000.

New Futures Nepal is charity run entirely by volunteers based in the UK who have been inspired to give something back to the people of Nepal by the establishment and management of two children’s homes in Nepal and Northern India.

The family event was sponsored by Yorkshire developer S Harrison Developments Ltd and involved a choice of three walks ranging from two miles to fifteen miles in and around the grounds of Castle Howard.

The Harrison Trek for children in Nepal was a resounding success. That was the verdict of the 300 or so people who gathered on an overcast mid-summer's day in the spectacular setting of Castle Howard and of the 250+ hardy walkers who took the challenge to walk 2, 5 or 15 miles to raise funds.

Here's a selection of pictures of the day. On behalf of all at Harrison, a huge thanks to those who took part - corporate teams and individuals - and to the charity and the Ghurkas for the excellent event organisation.

Nepal Trek

2008 charity trek launch at Castle Howard Harrison gives £10,000 support for children in Nepal

New Futures Nepal was established in 2003 by a group of walkers from the UK who were struck by the levels of deprivation they saw in the country when they visited on trekking break. Inspired by their Nepalese guide, Ram Thapa, they decided to support the setting up of a home for disabled and deprived children in Kathmandu. Since then their work has gone from strength to strength.

Says Colin Culley, former Yorkshire head teacher and now a trustee of the charity:

"We have ambitious plans to extend our work in Nepal and need all the support we can get. Harrison's decision to support us in 2008 has provided a tremendous boost. The idea is that their funding will enable us to set up an event which we hope will become an integral part of the Yorkshire social and charity calendar, raising funds year after year to support our cause. We are also very grateful to the Howard family for providing the setting for the event."

"So many charities now organise trekking events in Nepal to raise funds for UK causes so we thought it would be novel to stage a UK-based trek to raise money for Nepal. Our event is totally accessible to all and promises to provide a fun day out into the bargain."

Says Martyn Harrison, "We have a long tradition of charity support, most notably with St Catherine's Hospice in Scarborough, and we plan to maintain these links. We have been thoroughly impressed by the work of New Futures Nepal and are delighted to be working with them in 2008."
