Merchant Exchange, York

One of York's last city centre riverside sites was transformed into 22 luxury apartments by a consortium including S Harrison Developments.

The Merchant Exchange scheme included the conversion of a listed warehouse building which was designed to meet the demand for modern living space in the heart of the historic city.

The waterfront development incorporates four luxury penthouse apartments, all with rooftop gardens - a first for York. National restaurant and bar operator, The Living Room, chose the 9,000 sq ft balconied ground floor of the Merchant Exchange development as the location for its first outlet in the city.

At the inaugural York Design Awards, the Merchant Exchange development, set on the River Ouse, gained an award in the ‘Mixed Use’ category and the Ouse Acres complex, off Boroughbridge Road in York, gained an award for ‘Commercial Scheme’.

Initiated by the former Lord Mayor of York, Mrs Janet Hopton, the awards attracted over 41 entries which were judged by an independent panel.  The judges were looking for expertise in architecture, conservation and landscaping, with criteria including  sustainability issues, layout and context.
