New £32 million home for Council

The impressive West Offices scheme to provide a new headquarters and customer centre for City of York Council was approved unanimously by the Council's planning committee at their meeting in June.

New £10 million hotel on Toft Green was also approved with conditions to be met under powers delegated to officers, the committee chair and vice chair.

Chris Hale, S Harrison design manager for both schemes said:

"We’re delighted to have the approval of the planning committee for both the West Offices Council headquarters and the Toft Green hotel schemes, subject to conditions. Together they will revitalise this area of the city.

"We are in advanced negotiations with a leading brand international hotel operator for the £10 million hotel development which will bring 100 new construction jobs and 50 permanent jobs to the city. This is great news.

"We’ve been delighted to have had the backing of English Heritage and the Civic Trust for our West Offices scheme.

"Although the council has approved our plans, we now have to await the secretary of state’s approval once he has considered an objection by the Victorian Society to the listed buildings element of the West Offices application.

"This will delay our plans by at least a month but we are optimistic that the scheme will get the go-ahead and we can set about building a fitting new HQ and customer centre of which the whole city can be proud."
