Hotel plans approved - boost to city

A new hotel on Walmgate in York will bring new jobs and a further boost to tourism in the city.

S Harrison Developments Ltd has teamed up with Sojourn Hotels LLP to bring forward proposals for a new three storey hotel at 88-96 Walmgate. Infinity, the motorcycle clothing and accessory store currently on the site will be re-locating to new premises in the city.

Harrison has already been involved in regeneration projects in Walmgate recently completing two new halls of residence for York St John University students at Percy’s Lane and Gray’s Wharf. The two schemes which together provide homes for around 500 students have been praised for their design and the positive impact they have had on the area.

Harrison consulted with neighbours and local area representatives before successfully submitting its planning application to the council in 2010.

Harrison has teamed up with award winning York architects Crease Strickland Parkins to come up with a design which will enhance the streetscape in Walmgate using traditional materials, bricks and pantiles to respect the conservation area in which the hotel will be located.

The hotel will boost the Walmgate economy and help the tourist trade in the city. In additional to construction jobs, once completed the hotel could provide permanent jobs for up to 40 staff.
