Stanley Harrison House, the former Time Office, the Chocolate Works, York

City of York Councillors have given their backing to Harrison's £1 million plans to bring back to life the former Time Office on the important Chocolate Works site - the former headquarters and factory for Terry's, in Bishopthorpe, York.

The Time Office, now renamed Stanley Harrison House, is a Grade II listed building at the entrance to the Chocolate Works, adjacent to the city's world-famous racecourse on the Knavesmire.

The green-driven revitalisation will provide head office accommodation for the Harrison team.

Planning officers and councillors praised the design which retains the integrity of the 1920s building and introduces a number of sustainable features. Once completed the buidling will exceed the CO2 emissions performance required by the latest Building Regulations and achieve a better than excellent BREEAM rating. The plan is also to include other green features - air source heating, photovoltaic panel technology and solar powered water heating, making the building largely energy self-sufficient. Green travel plans for all those housed in the new accommodation is also part of the Harrison sustainable strategy.

This project provides the benchmark for sustainable development in the city as a whole. Harrison has demonstrated that older listed buildings can be returned to effective environmentally sustainable use whilst respecting their historic significance.

The creation of new high-quality accommodation in this important and prestigious location will provide a real boost to the regional economy, attracting inward investors to the city.
