New halls of residence for over 250 students could free up more traditional homes for rent by local York families if our proposal gets the go-ahead.

As the company behind the successful new halls at Gray’s Wharf and Navigation Rd in Walmgate we plan to build accommodation for 258 students on a derelict site adjacent to the multi-storey car park in Hungate.

We recently sought the views of local neighbours, councillors, the community policing team and others before submitting our planning application.

The two developments in Walmgate have been heralded a great success with students integrating into the local community and providing an economic boost for local traders.

The new £12 million scheme on the edge of Hungate will be built on a site which has been derelict for many years. If the plans win council backing the scheme will provide new construction jobs for the city, with work scheduled for completion in time for students’ arrival in Autumn 2013.

Despite marketing by the owners and their agents, there has been no interest in this site as a location for office development. There is little prospect of that changing so the site remains a derelict eyesore. We hope that by building new homes for students we will help stimulate further development and the completion of the nearby Hungate site. At the same time, by providing purpose-built student accommodation we are freeing up more traditional family homes currently used as student lets, making them available for York families.

The universities in York are one of the city’s great success stories, contributing tens of millions of pounds annually to the city’s economy.

Alongside excellent teaching and learning resources, providing first class accommodation is a central platform of their continuing success. The new halls in Walmgate are always amongst the most popular with students and we are confident that what is provided by this new scheme will be equally good.

Like the halls in Walmgate, the proposed new accommodation will be car-free with students living within easy walking distance of all the city’s amenities.

We want your comments

Together with York architects Crease Strickland Parkins, we put our proposals for the site on show at the National Centre for Early Music recently. Comments were be taken into account before final plans were submitted to the planning authority in January.
